Piri-piri

Piri-piri is the name of a very hot type of chilli. These very small chillies are birds-eye chillies. The chillies are dried, roasted and soaked in preparation of the sauce. This hugely popular sauce is typically found in Portugal and many parts of Eastern Africa (introduced by Portuguese traders) where it served as a condiment for almost every meal.

Piri-piri is also probably the original hot sauce. Almost all hot sauces are variations on the basic recipe for this Portuguese invention. Our monkeys are very grateful to these early culinary creators.

The sauce is most famously used to prepare piri-piri chicken which is just a whole chicken marinated in the sauce and then roasted until ready. This can then be served with potatoes / chips and salad or whatever else you fancy.

Many piri-piri's are simple recipes of just chillies, oil and vinegar. This is all well and good if you don't mind the simplicity of your typical Nandos style sauce but here at Spicymonkey Towers a lot of work has been put into finding the perfect blend of herbs and spices to give our sauce a truly authentic tasting marinade. You can almost imagine yourself in Lisbon or an old Portuguese colony in Mozambique every time you open our Piri-piri sauce.
